Maria Wiik- Innocentia, 1900. Maria Wiik (1853-1928) was a Finnish painter, active in Finland and Paris. In her homeland she was high in demand especially as a portrait painter. In France she was inspired by the realist movement, but later on she said to her friend Helene Schjerfbeck that the ideas of the symbolist movement felt liberating and helped her to move on in her career. Innocentia was created the same year as she went to Basel and came in contact with the paintings of the Swiss symbolist Arnold Böcklin. The painting is showing a girl that is surrounded by autumn leaves, the life of the girl has only started, but the season is already old.
